Time and Work Study in the Garment Industry


Duration: 40 hours classroom and 60 hours in-factory

Requirements:

  • Completion of GIPC Time Study & Textiles Basics or permission of instructor
  • Some university education desirable but not mandatory
  • Good understanding of basic mathematics
  • Experience in an industrial sewing operation
  • Familiarity with garment construction
  • English fluency helpful; Khmer acceptable (Chinese translation available)

Who Should Take This Course? Sewing supervisors, middle managers, high potential line leaders, industrial engineering department personnel

Objectives:

Participants will learn to identify the most efficient work methods to improve performance at the individual work station level, and in the overall flow of operations from cutting to shipping.

The course will develop the analytical skills regarding work methods and processes in the garment industry. The participant will learn to use basic motion study concepts to optimize the use of labor, materials and equipment to improve productivity and reduce manufacturing cost.

Course content:

  • Definition of efficiency, performance and productivity
  • Review of time study and cycle control
  • Analysis of process requirements
  • Production layout
  • Preparation of a Flow Process Chart
  • Identification and development of possible improvements
  • Implementation of the new methods
  • Estimating potential savings

Equipment recommended: Electronic stopwatch denominated in 100ths/minute

Competencies:

At the end of the course, the participant will be tested for the ability to analyze each sewing operation and improve the overall process of assembling a garment.
