Press Release: April 29, 2010 The Cambodia Skills Development Center and Puthisastra University announce the completion of their pilot course in production management, an intensive 3-month program designed to prepare participants for immediate employment in leadership positions in the garment industry. The first graduating class is small, but their achievement is significant: 8 had commitments for employment before the end of the program and to date 4 companies have contacted CASDEC about recruitment. Special guests, including representative of US Ambassador Mrs. Carol Rodley, Deputy of Mission, Mr Ted Allegra as well as HE Pich Sophoan and HE Laov Him of Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, will participate in an awards ceremony for the graduates, at the Phnom Penh Hotel this Thursday 29th April from 9h30am to 11h00am. Despite the dispiriting reports on job losses in Cambodia’s garment industry, training and skills development continue to offer a path to a more promising future. The industry is still key source of employment and critical economic engine, if one currently suffering from global competition. There are real incentives for employers to seek Cambodians for management. It has been noted that it costs more to employ foreigners because of living allowances, and that miscommunication and cultural differences can cause unhappiness in the workplace. However, the most important factor is the growing recognition by foreign investors that Cambodians can be effective in planning and managing. CASDEC and the Puthisastra University responded to the need for training in production management by partnering to offer a 3-month preparatory course. The intensive program is targeted at university graduates in management, engineering and similar disciplines. Participants will increase their employability and income potential, employers will be able to recruit Cambodians with practical production management knowledge, and the growth of a Cambodian management class will improve the competitiveness of the industry. Moreover, the program content will have application in other manufacturing industries as well, boosting Cambodia’s competitiveness overall and attracting more foreign investment. The 3-month program combines 2 months of theory, and 1 month of practical experience gained applying the principles in the factory. CASDEC client factories provided facilities to offer participants real work experience. CAMFEBA collaborated with the partners to identify job-seeking candidates attracted by the potential for employment, and the next phase will include a student loan program to help participants finance their tuition.
